There Is No

If there are no children, the surviving spouse often receives all the property. More distant relatives inherit only if there is no surviving spouse and if there are no children. In the rare event that no relatives can be found, the state takes the assets. There are no roses in the garden. There are no children playing on the street. There are no cities more beautiful than this. There are no people at the station. There are no countries that allow that. There are no blankets for sale there. It is usually the abstract nouns that are used in the singular with no. There is no reason for that behavior.

A 1994 Christian Democratic Union poster with the slogan 'Es Gibt Keine Alternative' ('There is no alternative')

'There is no alternative' (TINA) was a slogan often used by the ConservativeBritish prime ministerMargaret Thatcher.[1]

The phrase was used to signify Thatcher's claim that the market economy is the only system that works, and that debate about this is over. One critic characterized the meaning of the slogan as: 'Globalised capitalism, so called free markets and free trade were the best ways to build wealth, distribute services and grow a society's economy. Deregulation's good, if not God.'[2] By contrast, Thatcher described her support of markets as flowing from a more basic moral argument; specifically, she argued that the market-principle of choice flows from the moral principle that for human behavior to be moral requires free choice by people.[1]

  • There Is No Game is a tricky, puzzle game (or not game). Disobey the instructions, because there is no game! This funny adventure isn't about rules. In fact, your entire job is to ignore the narrator! Break the title, play with the speaker icon, and unlock mini-games. Try to find the goat!
  • For Trump, there is no alternative to impeachment by the House and a conviction by the Senate. The list of elected Republicans who voted with the mob is frighteningly long: eight senators and 139 House members voted against certifying the election results.
There Is No

Historically, the phrase may be traced to its emphatic use by the 19th-century classical liberal thinker Herbert Spencer in his Social Statics.[3][non-primary source needed] Opponents of the principle used it in a derisory manner. For instance, cabinet minister Norman St John-Stevas, one of the leading 'wets', nicknamed Thatcher 'Tina', after the acronym TINA.[citation needed] The critic of globalization Susan George coined the opposing slogan 'another world is possible' in 2001.[4][5]

Angela Merkel's use of the term alternativlos (literally 'alternative-less'; without alternative) in relation to her responses to the European sovereign-debt crisis in 2010 led to the term becoming Inappropriate word of the year.[6]

In 2013, Prime Minister David Cameron resurrected the phrase, stating 'If there was another way I would take it. But there is no alternative'—referring to austerity in the United Kingdom.[7]
